Big Wipes – Industrial Strength Cleaning Wipes

I recently received a sample of a new product that has launched recently here in Australia. It’s an industrial strength cleaning wipe called “BIG WIPES”. You can think of them as a turbo-charged version of Wet-Ones, because they definitely belong in your workshop or factory.

BIG WIPES are “pre-impregnated industrial-strength, dual-sided, antibacterial cleaning wipes” that come in a handy tub of 40 or 80 heavy-duty cleaning wipes, that cut through anything from heavy grease and oil-based paints to adhesives, silicon sealants and epoxy grouts. They feature a biodegradable cleaning formula, are antibacterial and even contain the skin conditioners Aloe Vera and Vitamin E (not that any self respecting handyman would care about that).

The BIG WIPES press release states:

“We believe so strongly in the power of BIG WIPES, we dare you to cover your hands in paint, glue, grease, oil – the messiest materials you can get your hands on – and clean your act up in one wipe with BIG WIPES!”

Why not I say. So I took my pack of BIG WIPES out to the workshop to do a couple of tests.

TEST 1 – SILICON

I must admit that this is the one I was most interested in.

I know that after using silicon, that even after wiping the silicon off your hands using a piece of newspaper or cloth rag that the feel and smell of the silicon stays on your hands for quite a while. Even after washing with water and soap, it doesn’t really seem to make much difference.

So I grabbed a tube of standard clear Silicon sealant, even though I would have preferred black for this particular test, squeezed some out and rubbed it over my fingers.

I was quite surprised to find that I only needed 1 BIG WIPE to clean the silicon off my hands. The wipes are quite moist and I also used a cloth rag to dry my hands afterwords, but the BIG WIPES did the job brilliantly.

My hand wasn’t left with a feel of silicon and even the smell was gone.

TEST 2 – OIL

I was pretty sure that this test would be pretty straight forward, and it was. I didn’t have any sump oil hanging around so I just removed the dip stick out of my Toro ride-on mower and wiped the oil on my hands. Once again the cleaning wipe did a great job in removing all traces of the oil.

TEST 3 – PAINT

I thought I’d test out how well these things clean when there is a lot more than just a thin layer of oil or grime. This time I poured some Mission Brown paint over my hand. I didn’t wipe off the excess with anything, and just had the handy tub of BIG WIPES on the bench to see how it would handle this job.

As you can see by the before and after images the BIG WIPES did the job quite well. It did take 5 of them to get my hands completely clean, but then again there was quite a lot of excess paint on my hands that had to be removed before the actual cleaning process began.

CONCLUSION

Overall I think having a tub of BIG WIPES in your shed or workshop is a great idea. You will definitely use them, and will be happy with the cleaning power these wipes actually have. They are also quite easy on the wallet at $9.99 RRP for a tub of 40 Wipes or $19.99 RRP for a tub of 80.
